Coatz

COATZ makes coats (and more) in Los Angeles, California. In 2016, Anne McCaddon, after more than a decade in a fine art practice, began to create garments that offer the narrative richness and individuality akin to artworks. To this day, every item is still one of a kind and hand-made from unique and unordinary textiles. We search out vintage, antique, and deadstock fabrics from around the globe and develop each garment based on the texture, weight, and amount of each material. Designed, cut, and sewn in Los Angeles, no two pieces are the same. Every garment is unisex and meant to be worn with ease.

WEST AFRICAN STRIP WEAVING

Many of our garments are made from West African strip-weave cotton. Strip-weaving is one of West Africa's oldest art forms. On a narrow horizontal loom measuring four to eight inches across, cotton (and sometimes other fiber) is woven in one continuous strip. These individual cloth strips are then cut and assembled to make one textile. You will notice the inherent seam running through the fabric—a result of this ancient process that some experts say dates back to the 10th century.
