Coatz

COATZ makes coats—and other garments—in Los Angeles, California.

By definition, a coat is an outer garment that extends to the waist or below. But it’s also something more: a layer, a covering, a second skin—like a coat of paint. Designed by artist Anne McCaddon, COATZ is rooted in a deep appreciation for textiles, storytelling, and the handmade.
We create both one-of-a-kind pieces and limited-edition runs, all cut and sewn in Los Angeles. Some designs begin with the fabric—rare, vintage, antique, or deadstock textiles sourced from around the world. Others begin with the silhouette—timeless essentials reimagined in a range of repurposed and natural materials. We use recycled, organic, and deadstock fibers whenever possible, drawn to their patina, their history, and their gentler impact on the planet.

WEST AFRICAN STRIP WEAVING

Many of our garments are made from West African strip-weave cotton. Strip-weaving is one of West Africa's oldest art forms. On a narrow horizontal loom measuring four to eight inches across, cotton (and sometimes other fiber) is woven in one continuous strip. These individual cloth strips are then cut and assembled to make one textile. You will notice the inherent seam running through the fabric—a result of this ancient process that some experts say dates back to the 10th century.
